Us Rednecks

I’m thinking about rednecks this morning.  This here is from Wikipedia, the working man’s encyclopedia.

The term characterized farmers having a red neck caused by sunburn from hours working in the fields. A citation from 1893 provides a definition as “poorer inhabitants of the rural districts…men who work in the field, as a matter of course, generally have their skin stained red and burnt by the sun, and especially is this true of the back of their necks”.

By 1900, “rednecks” was in common use to designate the political factions inside the Democratic Party the comprising poor white farmers in the South.

The same group was also often called the “wool hat boys” (for they opposed the rich men, who wore expensive silk hats). A newspaper notice in Mississippi in August 1891 called on rednecks to rally at the polls at the upcoming primary election:

Primary on the 25th.
And the “rednecks” will be there.
And the “Yaller-heels” will be there, also.
And the “hayseeds” and “gray dillers,” they’ll be there, too.
And the “subordinates” and “subalterns” will be there to rebuke their slanderers and traducers.
And the men who pay ten, twenty, thirty, etc. etc. per cent on borrowed money will be on hand, and they’ll remember it, too.

By 1910, the political supporters of the Mississippi Democratic Party politician James K. Vardaman —chiefly poor white farmers—began to describe themselves proudly as “rednecks,” even to the point of wearing red neckerchiefs to political rallies and picnics.

By the 1970s, the term had turned into offensive slang and had expanded its meaning to mean bigoted, loutish and opposed to modern ways, and was often used as a term to attack Southern white conservatives and racists.

Hope yawl enjoy my picture to the north of the text showing my grinning cousins, strong of heart and stout of overbite.

Yee Haw!

To Be Alone

To discover the conscious mind in a world where intellect is held to be valuable requires solitude, quite a lot of solitude. We have been very strenuously conditioned against solitude. To be alone is considered to be a grievous and dangerous condition.

So I beg you to recall in detail any times when you were alone. You will find the fear that we have been taught is not one fear, but many different fears. When you discover what they are they will be overcome. Most people have never been alone enough to feel these fears. But even without the experience of them they dread them.

Changes Coming

I’m going fishing this summer.

I’m moving out of here.

This chapter of my life is coming to an end.

I’m not going to be a central office bureaucrat any more.

A bureaucracy is an organization of non-elected officials of a government or organization who implement the rules, laws, and functions of their institution.

I’m going to move my identity and my stuff out of here……..

Winter Rain

This morning it was close to 50 degrees which is so unusual for Michigan.  Rain was pouring from the sky, not particularly cold rain.  The street was slick and it gathered up the light.  I gulped it down as I was getting into my car, thought better of it, and took out my camera/phone to take these pictures.
